The TGBS methodology provides a rigorous, site-based framework for assessing whether biodiversity outcomes in restoration and land management projects are credible, appropriate, and improving over time. It was developed by leading organisations in biodiversity science and ecological restoration, and builds on robust, internationally recognised frameworks including the 10 Golden Rules for Reforestation.

How the methodology works

The Standard brings together the knowledge of the global botanical community with the expertise of local communities, across initiatives worldwide. Assessments are carried out by locally embedded ecological experts with deep knowledge of their own ecosystems, landscapes, and restoration contexts.

TGBS certifies terrestrial, freshwater, and coastal project sites for their positive biodiversity outcomes. All land management initiatives are eligible, from habitat restoration and tree planting to agroforestry, agricultural land management, and other habitat interventions.

Sites are assessed against eight criteria. To achieve certification, projects must:

These criteria are grounded in the 10 Golden Rules for Reforestation which set out how to deliver reforestation that promotes biodiversity recovery, carbon absorption, and socio-economic benefits to local communities.

For full details on how sites are scored, the certification tiers, and the assessment process, see the Site-based Certification page.
